Ten-Finger Grip

From a Jim Furyk grip to a 10-finger grip. They may seem at opposite extreme ends, but they have their respective advantages and use, specially as drills. The Furyk grip keeps the right hand out of the downswing. It promotes an inside-out downswing, or prevents an over-the-top move, depending on how you see it. The 10-finger grip provides great control. It inhibits a handsy release and encourages a full shoulder turn. The key is to keep the grip light -- and not to chicken wing. This is even worth trying on the fairway!

Clip that Chicken Wing - Release!

Want to know how a properly hit 5-iron feels like? Want to feel the right shoulder turns over the left in the finish? How to "keep your hands in front of your body"? Clip that chicken wing! How to do it? Make sure you don't pull with the left elbow during impact. Don't flip the left wrist. Release after impact by turning the left hand counter-clockwise (the palm pointing to the sky) and turn the right hand over the left. You will feel the follow through as the club points to the target and a finish over your left foot with the club over the left shoulder.

What is it with Wrist Shots?

Is it to prove existence? ownership? Is it simply to show how it looks like on the wrist? But why always a simple frontal? Is there no room for some photography?

Home on the Range

There's a big difference in practising irons on a mat and on the ground. Ground is better because you get a sense of divot. It also trains you to hit down on the ball. Ball and turf (or ground in this case). Bad habits like flipping are highlighted. Great at recreating the right feeling at impact. Really makes you realize the importance of a full turn on the backswing, because it's the only way to make solid impact. Also trains you to stay with the shot until impact, then a body turn to the target for the finish. Might be training more at Kagitingan (driving range), especially with irons.

Bigger Grip Size + Lower Swing Weight = Better Irons

Had my MP57 iron grips adjusted by adding a couple of tape wraps inside. I felt the stock grip was too small, causing me to tighten my fingers and tense up. The additional weight on the grip end has the favorable effect of lowering the swing weight, from D0 to C9. It happens to be the right swing weight for me. Now the grip size is right, the swing weight is right, and the MP57s felt great at the driving range today. They feel like "my irons" now. Can't wait to hit them at the fairways.

Two OB Hook Drives + A Double Too Many = 93

Pars and bogeys are OK. Just a momentary lapse in concentration, and there it goes.

Oscar Nominees

The list of Oscar nominees is out. My short list of bets: "Avatar" for Best Picture (and other awards), Carrey Mulligan ("An Education") for Best Actress, "Up" for Animated Feature (the opening sequence is a classic by itself).
