IPadOS 14, a User’s Initial Impressions

Got a few days with iOS 14 for the iPhone and iPadOS for the iPad Air (2019).

So far quite happy with the iPhone. This post is on the iPad experience.

The widgets are slicker and more useful. There were widgets before but I didn’t use them much. This new version is more user friendly and dynamic.

Privacy settings are more transparent. I really like that I am asked to provide permission for apps to access photos, camera, the local network, etc.. After watching “The Social Dilemma” it somehow gives me a little sense of “control.”

The only problem I encountered was the casting to Chromecast on Facebook. The cast button doesn’t seem to work. I encountered the same problem with the iPhone initially but was able to get it to work. I couldn’t get it to work on the iPad Air. Maybe it’s the Facebook app as it works perfectly with Netflix.

One thing I miss is the App Library. It is really helpful on the iPhone to tidy things up. Too bad it’s not on the iPad Air.

I also am excited about Scribble. Don’t have an Apple Pencil (yet) but this really looks like a cool feature.

Overall the UI is smooth and the iPad seems to run faster. No penalties felt on battery life.

Aside from the missing App Library, it’s an improvement as significant as iOS 14. Maybe iPadOS 14.1 will make it more complete.
